Welcome to 2022
March 9, 2022RWHB’s new biking group
May 19, 2022Sunrise Hut 23-April-2022 – On Saturday 23 April we had a clear view of the Ruahine ranges from Hastings so a group of eleven under the leadership of our Hastings club captain, Bernie Bowden, climbed up to Sunrise Hut (1300m). It was a steady climb to the top, in the bush for most of the way.
Two and a quarter hours after starting we emerged from the bush and arrived at Sunrise Hut. The day was superb with clear views out over Hawkes Bay and very little wind.
After a stop for lunch and some photo opportunities we proceeded along a ridge to Armstrong Pass. From here we had views to Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro.
Armstrong Pass was named for a pilot who crashed there in 1935. He must have wandered from the crash site and was never found.
Our return to the cars and home was uneventful. Many had not been to Sunrise Hut so were happy to be able to tick that off the bucket list.
